Places to visit while sailing in Saronic region

Aegina

It is the closest island to Athens. Aegina town was even the temporary capital of the newly founded Greek state. The island has a great number of sites such as lovely squares and beautiful neoclassical buildings with the unique architecture. The most popular sites are the Ancient Temple of Athena Aphaia and the Sanctuary of Apollo Delfinios, Kolona. The temple of Athena Aphaia is named after a Greek goddess Aphaia. It forms an equilateral triangle with the Parthenon and the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion. The temple host impressive sculpted pediments. Kolona was the religious and political base of the city and was named after it’s only pillar. There are several sandy beaches on Aegina you can enjoy. It is a popular stop for charterers due to the sheltered Saronic Gulf.

Hydra

Hydra is an island built in the shape of an amphitheatre on a slope. It is overlooking the Argosaronic Gulf. The island is famous for its night life and is the favourite of the international Jet-Set. It has a long promenade where you can dine in a restaurant or shop in famous jewellery and art boutiques. The cars are banned on the island and the mules and donkeys are the main means of heavy transport. There are 300 churches, 6 monasteries and many statues of the Independence War. Shipowners and merchants built most of the beautiful mansions in the city. Hydra town has been declared to be a traditional and protected settlement. The island has a lot of beaches with crystal clear waters. The most famous ones are Agios Nikolaos, Bitsi, Vlichos and Kaminia.
